WASH is an acronym that stands for “water, sanitation, and hygiene”. Universal, affordable and sustainable access to WASH is a key public health issue within international development and is the focus of Sustainable Development Goal No.6. According to UNICEF, poor access to improved water and sanitation in Nigeria remains a major contributing factor to high morbidity and mortality rates among children under age five.

Sustainable water resources are essential to human health, environmental sustainability and economic prosperity. Achieving universal access to drinking water, sanitation and hygiene and ensuring that services are safely managed remain major challenges, and meeting them are crucial to further progress in health, education, environmental sustainability and poverty eradication.
